The Filipino- American Association (Fil-Am) of Iwakuni, Japan, hosted the 21st Annual Pistahan at Pasko sa Nayon at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Dec. 9, 2017.
Over 200 people from different cultures gathered at Club Iwakuni to watch performances, eat dinner and welcome incoming officers to the association while preserving the traditions of Filipino Christmas.
“This event is an annual event that the Filipino-American Association does to promote our diversity and to share that in Iwakuni,” said former Fil-Am president Peter Tan. “Since the beginning of the association, we have continued this tradition to show Filipinos and Americans the diversity and togetherness that we have here.”
The event included dance and musical performances by children and adults that combined American and Filipino traditional Christmas carols and modern day popular songs.
Santa Claus made a guest appearance and surprised the children in attendance with pictures and gifts.
A dinner buffet provided by Marine Corps Community Services Iwakuni and cash bar were open for the duration of the event.
“Pasko sa Nayon is more about involving the community, so it’s not just about inside of your own home,” said Robert Franke, president of The Filipino- American Association of Iwakuni. “It’s about welcoming everyone in and everyone being equal here.”
