Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) expanded their historical understanding during a tour in historic Akko, Israel, July 4.
The tour showcased architecture from the 16th and 18th centuries and featured the Crusader Fortress in the city of Akko as well as the Templars’ Tunnel that runs under the city.
“We saw old town Akko, one of the forts the Templar built, a lot of hidden passages and a lot of the history of Akko throughout the different empires that have ruled over it,” said Chief Machinist’s Mate Jesse Green. “We go to see how much has happened since then and how far beneath the modern architecture everything is buried.”
The tour started off at the Crusader Fortress in Akko, Israel, where Sailors learned about the crusades and architectural influence Europe had in Israel.
The Crusades were a series of holy wars called by popes with the promise of indulgences for those who fought in them and directed against external and internal enemies of Christendom for the recovery of Christian property or in defense of the Church or Christian people.
“My favorite part of the tour was getting to see all of the old architecture,” said Aviation Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class Joshua Hennessy. “It’s very rare that we get to see 16th and 18th century architecture. Learning about history on the tour was very different than learning about it at school because you get to experience being there instead of just reading about it.”
After the Crusader Fortress, the group went to the local bazzar in Akko to find the Templars’ Tunnel.
“My favorite part of the tour was the Templars’ Tunnel,” said Green. “It was pretty cool to see the history behind it and see such a recent discovery and learn the historical significance behind it. I didn’t know that the Templars were the first bankers. That was very interesting information to find out.”
For a lot of Sailors getting to visit the Holy Land was an experience they will never forget.
“Getting to see the history here in Israel was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Green. “Getting to walk through and physically experience the history was a really cool experience.”
Sailors can attain a lot of knowledge from historical tours like the one in Akko in just one afternoon.
“The tour was very informative, and I learned a lot of history about Israel that I didn’t know about,” said Hennessy. “The tour guide really knew what he was talking about instead of just reading off a paper.”
