U.S. Marines with 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, were awarded the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal by Col. Steven J. White, commanding officer of 23rd Marines, Dec. 9, 2017, in Pico Rivera, California.

The Marines were awarded for earning the Super Squad Competition medal during a division-wide competition, Aug. 4-9, 2017, at Fort Richardson, Alaska.

The annual Super Squad Competition, which is open to each of the division infantry regiments, is designed to evaluate 14-man infantry squads throughout an extensive field and live-fire evolution. There, the Marines are pushed to their limits on various events such as land navigation, patrolling techniques and combat marksmanship.

“In a combat environment every Marine is pushed to his or her breaking point which was the goal for the Super Squad Competition.” said Sgt. Coleman Kelsey, platoon sergeant with Golf Company, 23rd Marine Regiment.

Even as competition winners the Marines of 2nd Battalion left with a better understanding of leadership, planning and esprit de corps.

“This training showed that even though we learn new skills and progress through the Marine Corps, there is always something to improve and refine to help teach our junior Marines,” said Kelsey.

In addition to developing infantry skills, the competition enhances teamwork and unit cohesion and ensures Marines are maintaining deployment readiness.

“This competition ensures that our Marines have the skills and are ready to deploy at a moment’s notice,” said Cpl. Albert Llamas, a squad leader with Golf Company, 23rd Marine Regiment.

The winners of the Super Squad Competition were awarded Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medals for standing out amongst their peers and surpassing expectations during the evaluation period of the competition.

“We experienced over 100 hours of graded criteria; the main event was three days straight of displaying our skills as riflemen,” said Kelsey. “We were the squad that went above and beyond the expectations and requirements and shone above the rest.”
