TF Falcon takes command of skies over Afghanistan

During a transfer of authority ceremony, Task Force Falcon, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division assumed responsibility of commanding the skies for Army aviation throughout Afghanistan.

On September 29, the brigade cased their home-station colors at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia, and has since been recognized as TF Falcon.

Col. Mark Johnson, Command Sgt. Maj. Terri Clavon and Chief Warrant Officer 5 Brent Melland, TF Falcon command team, unveiled their unit’s colors during a ceremony on November 1 signifying the official start of the task force’s support in Operations Freedom’s Sentinel and Resolute Support.

“Our task force assumes the mission today, comprised of elements from the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade; South Carolina, Iowa, Illinois and Pennsylvania Army National Guard,” said Col. Mark Johnson, TF Falcon commander. “Together these elements have flown thousands of hours, conducted tough, realistic training and attained a high level of readiness as an integrated aviation team.”

One hundred years ago this month, the 3rd Infantry Division was formed and shortly thereafter set out to join coalition partners and allies in World War I, he explained. Today, the dog-faced Soldiers of Task Force Falcon continue the legacy of the 3rd Inf. Div. alongside our Afghan, coalition and alliance partners.

“Aviation played a key component in the 3rd Infantry Division and its partners success and today the dog-faced Soldiers of Task Force Falcon stand ready to continue the legacy of aviation excellence as we assume the mission in support of Operations Freedom’s Sentinel and Resolute Support.”

Additionally, Task Force Raptor, 16th Combat Aviation Brigade, 7th Infantry Division cased their unit colors indicating the end of their operation in Afghanistan.

“As the mighty Falcon Brigade assumes the mission in Afghanistan, it begins another chapter in your distinguished lineage; all of our Soldiers wish you and your team the best. The CJOA [Combined Joint Operations—Afghanistan] is in great hands,” said Col. William Ryan, TF Raptor commander.
