CAMP GRAFTON TRAINING CENTER, DEVILS LAKE, N.D. - Six new M916A3 Light Equipment Transporters will make their way to North Dakota Army National Guard units across the state on Oct. 31, 2008. Soldiers spent the week learning how to operate and maintain the transporter. As the training ended today, Soldiers left Camp Grafton Training Center near Devils Lake, N.D., in the new equipment, bringing it to their home unit.

Four Montana Army National Guard Soldiers joined 16 North Dakota Soldiers for the training. The North Dakota Soldiers hail from the units that each will receive one of the new M916A3 transporters: the 835th Engineer Asphalt Team and 897th Engineer Concrete Team, both of Carrington, N.D.; the 133rd Quartermaster Detachment, of Grafton, N.D.; the 134th Quartermaster Detachment, of Cavalier, N.D.; and the J4 logistical branch maintenance.

"This new equipment will be well-used across the state as Soldiers transport engineer equipment for missions and training. It also enables the Guard to quickly load and transport equipment to the site of a natural disaster, further ensuring that we're always ready and always there when the governor says the citizens of North Dakota need us," said Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota National Guard adjutant general.

Resembling a civilian tractor-trailer, the M916A3 offers a number of improvements over the decades-old M920 truck tractors it replaces. The 6-by-6 transporter is equipped with a 430-horsepower Detroit Diesel S60 engine, improved interior design, seven-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. It features a 45,000-pound-capacity winch, which allows Soldiers to quickly and easily load equipment, whether it's for training or responding to a natural disaster.
