The Idaho National Guard held a change of command ceremony to signify the transfer of authority between outgoing commanding general, Maj. Gen. Gary L. Sayler to the incoming Brig. Gen. Michael J. Garshak Nov. 5 at Gowen Field.
Sayler retired after serving Idaho since 1977 and left Garshak, who has been serving the Idaho National Guard since 1993, to be Idaho’s 25th Adjutant General.
Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter presided over the ceremony, which included a large formation of Idaho National Guard Soldiers and Airmen as well as customary military traditions such as passing of the colors and others. On display were two A-10 Thunderbolt II’s, a UH-72 Lakota, a M1A2V3 Abram and a Bradley fighting vehicle.
“Col. Garshak is a strong leader with a proven track record of success,” said Sayler. “He’s respected by his peers and those he had led throughout his career and I am very comfortable with this selection and confident he will continue to do great things for this organization.”
After Garshak was appointed he shared three primary, strategic imperatives for the Idaho Military Division, which included maintaining warfighting readiness, homeland security/emergency response readiness and building/fostering partnerships.
“I am honored to serve with such a dedicated and professional workforce – the best our state and nation has to offer,” said Garshak. “I am confident that together, we will lead the Idaho Military Division to a future of opportunity and success.”
