Adopt A Family US Virgin Islands has brought in over 50,000 boxes of relief supplies donated by families on the US mainland in support of the hurricane relief efforts. 10,000 of those boxes were delivered to the Virgin Islands National Guard for distribution here.
VING Recruiting and Retention Battalion took on this task to ensure relief care packages were delivered to multiple senior citizen homes.
“We are honored and feel very proud that seniors have not been forgotten,” said Judith Velasquez, service coordinator for Flamboyant Gardens.
Command Sgt. Maj. Roy G. Vialet and his unit worked diligently with management of six senior homes, and gave packages to at least 300 elders. “It went very well,” said Vialet. “All of my recruiters felt appreciated and enjoyed giving the packages to our seniors.”
The US Virgin Islands Adopt A Family utilizes a network of adopters and adoptees through a system of non-paid volunteers. The organization was created to support families in the USVI who were negatively impacted as a result of both Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
