    Story by Valerie OBerry

    Marine Corps Base Quantico

His enlistment as an aviation boatswains mate handler and master at arms took him across the Atlantic Ocean. Adventure is what he found at the ports and cities that only a few have the privilege of experiencing. He describes it as some of the best experiences he has ever had, although after a year and half, he recalls feeling like he wasn’t really helping his fellow sailors and Marines as much as he could.
Guidance from the ship’s Chaplain was all that he needed to make the lateral transfer to the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of religious program specialist, which would forever impact his personal and professional life.
Greer and his family moved to Marine Corps Base Quantico this past year. He now serves as the assistant to the command chaplain and helps to facilitate the installation’s religious program. He loves being able to follow his faith and being able to help others on a daily basis through volunteering.
“Helping others feel like they matter and the value it provides to my life and theirs” is the reason, he said, that makes him take time to volunteer on and off of the installation. On Sundays, he dedicates his afternoon to the Awana’s Ministry group where he is able to mentor youth and help them find purpose within their lives.
During the week, he always makes time to help his fellow sailors and Marines volunteer in the local community. ”It is a great team building activity. It helps me learn why they wake up every day and provides us with the ability to be a part of projects that matter.”
Becoming a volunteer in the community is easy. Just visit the base’s volunteer website at www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/ap?ap=1470834438 and sign up to be a volunteer.
