    Story by Cpl. Vanessa Austin

Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

PFC Opha May, Platoon 4044, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, made her debut Nov. 17, 2017, during her graduation where she officially assumed her duties as Recruit Depot Parris Island’s new mascot.

Opha began training Aug. 21, 2017, and replaces the late Cpl. Legend who served as the Depot mascot from November 2011 to September 2017.

She completed a modified recruit training schedule, participating in key events next to her fellow recruits.

These events included receiving, initial drill, rappel training, gas chamber and a combat fitness test.

Cpl. Phillips, Opha’s handler, has seen Opha through her journey from the very beginning. Cpl. Phillips feels as though Opha has made a huge improvement and will be a great mascot.

“She has undergone an extensive obedience program for the past few weeks,” Phillips said. “She has learned commands such as sit, come, place, and heel as well as a few others. Most of all she has been practicing patience and she is doing exceptionally well.”

Opha May’s primary duties will be to participate in the Depot Colors Ceremony, Recruit Graduations, and various other events focused on enhancing command morale and esprit de corps aboard the Depot.
