Motivation is the driving force behind those choosing to pursue excellence. Everyone’s motivations are different and are brought forth from different sources. For Naval Surface Warfare Center Port Hueneme Division’s (NSWC PHD) Christine Delgado Lebron, her support for the United States Navy is driven by her ability to positively affect the safety of America’s warfighters; something she experienced first-hand while her active duty husband served the fleet.

As the Industrial Engineering Branch Manager for NSWC PHD’s Littoral and Strike Warfare Department, Delgado Lebron oversees 15 engineers who conduct combat and weapon system installations aboard U.S. Navy and foreign military ships. Her leadership is delivered with pride and passion, continually pushing her team to achieve their best.

“As a supervisor, I provide direct support to my employees by ensuring each has the training, equipment and resources necessary to perform their job,” she said. “My leadership philosophy is we’re all one team, here to support each other and the PHD mission. I feel I lead my team with respect and integrity, and use these as the foundation to make decisions.”

Delgado Lebron strives to be the best in her position, but the mission to support the nation’s warfighter is her ultimate goal. Her husband spent nine years serving the Navy, motivating her to ensure systems are properly installed and perform as needed. Her passion for supporting the fleet is something she passes on to her team, hoping to instill a sense of pride and accountability throughout their work.

“During his deployment,” she explained, “I got a real sense of the importance my job means to the Navy. The time I spent working helped put into perspective why we do what we do and why ship readiness is so important. I remind my team and co-workers of the importance to perform their job with integrity, mitigate risk, and remember the many families that depend on us.”

Originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Delgado Lebron earned a bachelor’s in Industrial Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico. She first learned about Naval Sea Systems Command from a federal job fair hosted on campus and was subsequently hired by NSWC PHD in 2009 as an electronics engineer for the Tomahawk and Mark 34 Gun Weapon System.

Beyond the workplace, Delgado Lebron enjoys serving the community alongside her husband, in addition to taking on the best role of her life as the mother to her child.

“I'm a new mother of an 8-month-old boy,” she said. “For this reason, some of my hobbies have been set aside to allow more time to spend on the most amazing hobby there is, my son. As a full time employee at PHD, work-life balance is in full force. I'm still involved in community services with my husband through our church.”

These activities include feeding the homeless, visiting convalescent homes, and performing repairs at schools, just to name a few. When asked about why she enjoys working for NSWC PHD, Delgado Lebron exclaimed the diversity of people make for a great environment.

“The workforce here is composed of a vast pool of personnel with different races, backgrounds, gender, personalities, and ages,” she said. “There is a mutual respect for each other that allows us to contribute to the goals and objectives of the command as a united front. We encounter daily challenges that directly impact the overall operational and safety of the fleet. A team with different ideas and perspectives provides a broader approach to finding the best solution.”
