Global Thunder keeps Airmen ready for anything

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, WA, UNITED STATES

Story by Airman 1st Class Wren Fiontar

    92nd Air Refueling Wing

Team Fairchild participated in a United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) exercise, Global Thunder 18, to enhance joint mobility operations with Air National Guard partners and to execute and sustain mission readiness.

Global Thunder is an annual command, control and field training exercise designed to train Department of Defense forces and assess joint-operational readiness across all USSTRATCOM’s mission areas. USSTRATCOM has executed Global Thunder exercises since 2005.

“The Global Thunder exercise was a unique opportunity to assess our joint-operational readiness,” said Col. Ryan Samuelson, 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander. “U.S. forces are able to effectively deter any threat because of our work with joint, coalition and allied partners, anywhere around the world at any time.”

Commands use exercises to keep Airmen in a state of readiness to fulfill their roles in times of deployment or crisis. One of the most important readiness factors is promoting clear communication between leadership and their Airmen.

“I work to connect the right leadership with the situation at hand and ensure clear communication,” said Capt. Ryan King, 92nd ARW Crisis Action Team director. “The CAT may be at the top of base command and direction, but it’s our Airmen’s training and proficiency that really displays where the team’s strengths lie.”

Fairchild’s Airmen are on watch 24 hours a day, seven days a week, standing ready to enable USSTRATCOM’s forces with enhanced mobility to deter attacks against the U.S. and its allies.
