National Capital Region Airmen Receive CCAF Degrees

WASHINGTON NAVY YARD, DC, UNITED STATES

More than a dozen Airmen assigned to JBAB and the Pentagon received their CCAF degrees after having completed all required course work and semester hours.
“A degree from the CCAF is an associate in applied science degree,” said Master Sergeant Matthew Smith, assigned to Defense Information Systems Agency, Joint Staff Support Center. “It requires 64 semester hours, which are spread throughout everything from basic military training, to technical school, to general education credits and elective credits they’ve earned. It also includes five civilian courses like math, English, social science and humanities.”
“It all begins at basic military training and technical school. From there they have to take at least five civilian courses and have at least six hours of military leadership or military science. Those things can be earned by going to Airman Leadership School, Noncommissioned Officers Academy, or by taking College-Level Exam Program or Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support level exams in management or supervision. There’s a degree program that fits the needs of each Air Force specialty code out there,” said Smith.
Graduates at the ceremony ranged from junior Airmen in their first year of service to senior non-commissioned officers with families.
“It was quite a struggle,” said Tech. Sgt. Talanna Fischer, CCAF graduate. “Initially education wasn’t my focus. It wasn’t until I had a son and my nieces and nephews started coming along that I decided to become more of a leader and role model. So, I decided to finish up the few classes that I need that were required for the CCAF and here I am today.”
“Not a lot of people in my family went to college, have degrees or even have a high school diploma. For my parents and grandparents, if they were able to attend today, they would definitely be smiling,” said Fischer.
Fischer feels all Airmen should take advantage of the opportunities the CCAF program provides.
“Since you’re automatically enrolled in the CCAF program, you should finish the courses required, so at least when you get out you’d have some form of education to lean on,” said Smith.
