Marine Corps Installations to become REAL ID Act compliant
There are new identification requirements outlined by the Department of Homeland Security under the REAL ID Act that can affect base access for some visitors.
Beginning Tuesday, Marine Corps Installations East will enforce the REAL ID Act of 2005 compliance.
“There will be no impact to a large majority of those who frequent the installation,” said Capt. Brandon Cox, company commander, Military Police Support Company, MCIEAST. “This will primarily affect visitors to the installation or contractors and vendors who do not have a base access credential.”
If you do not have an authorized valid access control credential such as a Department of Defense Common Access Card or a DoD Uniformed Services Identification and Privilege Card, you may need to provide an alternate form of acceptable identification to gain access to base.
Alternate forms of identification include U.S. Passports or Passport cards, U.S. Permanent Resident Cards and U.S. State Department Driver’s License. If no alternate ID is presented, people requesting access to base must be escorted by a sponsor who meets the installation’s requirements.
“It is important to note that this mandate does not impact your ability to operate a motor vehicle on or off a military installation,” said Antonio Romano, law enforcement coordinator, MCIEAST. “This is for identity proofing and vetting purposes for commercial air travel and entrance into federal facilities and nuclear power plants.”
The workers at the visitor’s center and the contractor vetting office have trained for the implementation of the act.
“The majority of the issues will arise at the visitor’s center or contractor vetting office when unaffiliated personnel attempt to gain passes to access the installation,” said Cox. “The staffs at those locations have received thorough training in the REAL ID Act. Gate sentries have also been familiarized with the policy.”
The Transportation Safety Agency will also follow this act but will continue to accept all valid drivers’ licenses until Jan. 22, 2018. After which, a REAL ID is required.
“I would highly recommend individuals interested in obtaining a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or state identification do so when their respective state becomes compliant,” said Romano. “You should continue to check for updates on the Department of Homeland Security website.”
