    Naval Health Clinic Oak Harbor

OAK HARBOR - Vice Adm. Forrest Faison, Navy surgeon general and chief, U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED), visited Naval Health Clinic Oak Harbor (NHC OH) on 16 November, taking time to visit with Sailors, Ombudsmen, and tour the facility. Accompanying him was Force Master Chief Hosea Smith.

The visit was part of a joint service tour throughout the Pacific Northwest during which Faison met with staff from Interim Operational Capability (IOC) sites for the Defense Health Agency's (DHA) new electronic health record (EHR) MHS GENESIS. When MHS GENESIS launched at Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC) on 21 October, it marked the fourth successful EHR implementation for the Department of Defense.

The implementation at MAMC signaled the completion of IOC deployment for key military sites across the Pacific Northwest. Previously, MHS GENESIS was launched at Fairchild Air Force Base, NHC OH, and Naval Hospital Bremerton. MHS GENESIS will assist in supporting healthcare delivery for the 9.4 million members of the armed forces, their families, and their beneficiaries.

During his time with command leadership, Faison discussed the future of Navy Medicine, the readiness of the Navy’s medical force, and the importance of providing the best care and compassion to those entrusted to Navy Medicine. “Medicine is constantly changing, and it’s important you have an understanding of the big picture and what’s impacting Navy Medicine,” Faison said. “We need to drive information and decision support to the point of care, and be well positioned to provide best practices with increased standardization and reduced variability.”

Faison enjoyed lots of one-on-one contact with Sailors and civilians from NHC OH and expressed his gratitude for all their hard work. “In the midst of unprecedented change, you have managed numerous challenges in this fairly remote location," Faison told staff. “We asked you to be the first Navy Military Treatment Facility to deploy a new health record, and you did that, all while taking care of our patients and their families. If you don’t remember anything else I say today, remember that I thank you!”

Faison also explained that the Navy and Navy Medicine are preparing for the next conflict. “We’re moving from non-nation terrorism to nation-states that project sea power. The next conflict will be very different. We must continually assess what care should look like here to meet the mission and allow us to maintain our skills and competencies for the next fight," said Faison.

At his Admiral’s Call, he presented command coins for excellence in performance to Lt. Mindy Paturzzio, Hospitalman Kartal Karabas and Ms. Sarah McComb.

NHC OH is part of the Navy Medicine team, a global health care network of Navy medical professionals around the world who provide high-quality health care to more than one million eligible beneficiaries. Navy Medicine personnel deploy with Sailors and Marines worldwide, providing critical mission support aboard ships, in the air, under the sea, and on the battlefield.
