    A Paw-istivly good time

1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division

bColorado Springs, CO. – Soldiers from Charlie Company, 4th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division moved quickly through the sparsely wooded field, emplacing various tent parts and clearing areas for set up of vehicles and other field equipment. The only difference between the field equipment that these Soldiers usually set up and the ones currently being used was that the latter had no tactical value- no camouflage, no bullet proof glass, no mounted machine guns.
Everything the Soldiers were setting up was for the “Pawtoberfest” Event held in Bear Creek Park over the weekend Sep. 16. The event is held by the Humane Society of Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) to raise money and awareness of the HSPRR’s efforts along with allowing people to attend an “Oktoberfest” style event with their four legged friends.
““We’re service members who are engaging in service for the community,” said 1st Lt. Sophia Imperioli. The Charlie Company Treatment Platoon Leader and volunteer event organizer carried on with a smile, “What better way to interact with the community than actually going out and engaging with the people we serve.”
Soldiers from Charlie Company worked both Friday and Saturday, Sep. 15-16. On Friday the Soldiers helped to set up tents, spaces for vendors, food trucks and entertainment venues and ensured the two mile dog walk path was cleared.
“Many of our Soldiers have dogs and regularly bring them to company social events. Our Soldiers also like to volunteer, so Pawtoberfest was a way for us to give back to the community and also involve the furry family members we love” said Charlie Company Commander Capt. Lisa Quiroz.
“Given the field schedule of the 4BSB it is easy to understand a desire to be a part of the civilian community, it’s the one they are least a part of and a significant way to connect with family” said 1st Sgt. Victoria Reeves, Charlie Company 1st Sgt.
The field schedule mentioned by Reeves is a grueling one; essentially the 4BSB has one month on one month off with some sections of the Battalion staying in a field environment for as long as 90-110 days from Jan. 2017 to Aug. of 2017. Some sections have maintained 24 hour operations for weeks and months at a time.
Effectively parts of the 4BSB have been operating on a schedule similar to that of units that are deployed. So one can’t be too hard pressed to believe Soldiers would want to find a way to relieve that stress.
“And what better way to get rid of stress than helping out the community, playing with some puppies, and spending some time in the beautiful parks of Colorado? If it’s not something to be proud of that your Soldiers relax by helping others what is,” said Imperioli.
