In an effort to expand partnerships, the inaugural meeting for medical treatment facilities (MTF) in the Gulf Coast Region was held at Naval Hospital Pensacola (NHP) on Oct. 8.

The group, known as the Gulf Coast Consortium, included leadership from NHP, the 325TH Medical Group at Tyndall Air Force Base and the hospital at Eglin Air Force Base. Leaders from the Keesler Medical Center on Keesler Air Force Base were not able to attend, but will be part of future meetings.

“We all decided to meet to maximize utilization of our MTF assets across the Gulf Coast Region,” said Capt. Amy Branstetter, commanding officer, NHP. “We share a common mission of ensuring a medically ready force and ready medical force while providing health care to service members and their families. We all have ideas and opportunities that we can share amongst ourselves to improve the care we provide and improve the readiness of our medical personnel.”

The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal 17 has made clear the importance of partnerships and in the Gulf Coast Region, the geography of the MTF locations is well suited for resource sharing. Keesler Air Force Base is located in Biloxi, Mississippi, and Tyndall Air Force Base is located in near Panama City, Florida, approximately 250 miles apart. Eglin Air Force Base and NHP are located between Keesler and Tyndall.

Following a tour of NHP, the leaders discussed possible partnerships or resources that could be shared amongst the MTFs. Focusing on readiness and skill sustainment opportunities, the group is already exploring prospects including the creation of a shared training calendar that all the MTFs can utilize. With modern technologies like video teleconferencing and telemedicine now available, sharing training opportunities like case study reviews and health care lectures can easily be accomplished across the four MTFs.

“We greatly appreciated the invite and the opportunity to learn about one of our sister service hospitals on the Gulf Coast,” said Col. Scott McKim, commander, 325th Medical Group. “It was a good initial discussion about our capabilities and areas where we may be able to cooperate to further each other's respective missions.”

The next meeting for the Gulf Coast Consortium is scheduled for some time in January.

Established in 1826, Naval Hospital Pensacola is comprised of the main hospital and 10 branch health clinics across five states. To find out more, visit http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/pcola/Pages/default.aspx or download the command’s mobile app (keyword: Naval Hospital Pensacola)
