Story by Staff Sgt. Daniel Martinez

    156th Wing

A Preventative Aerospace Medicine (PAM) team from the 138th Fighter Wing, Oklahoma Air National Guard, surveyed a Puerto Rico National Guard Armory to assess health conditions for Soldiers, Nov. 14, 2017, in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.

The PAM team completed the assessment of the armory in Mayagüez by inspecting the armory’s water supply, bathroom facilities, and living facilities. The team also addressed any safety concerns, and met with leaders of the armory and listened to their recommendations.

“This location in Mayagüez has been one of the better facilities we’ve inspected, and it was very apparent that leadership was aware of the troops needs,” said Capt. Richard Mears, a Physician Assistant with the 138th Fighter Wing.

The PAM team was initiated to ensure members of the Puerto Rico National Guard have received adequate living conditions while they continue to assist the island’s recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

“The preventative aerospace medicine team has been assigned by the Air National Guard in coordination with the Joint Operations Center to go out to every armory on the island to conduct a preventative health and environment assessment to ensure our troops are getting what they need to perform the mission,” said Lt. Col. Norma Miller, a Public Health Officer with the 138th Fighter Wing. “This is a great opportunity for us to come from the mainland and help meet the needs of our fellow citizens of Puerto Rico.”

Each PAM team consists of a bioenvironmental engineer, public health officer, medical physician and a physician’s assistant.

The PAM teams will continue to run assessments on all Army National Guard Armories on the island, to ensure our troops continue to operate at full potential.
