Rear Adm. Kyle J. Cozad, commander, Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) announced the fourth quarter Sailor of the Quarter (SOQ) and Instructor of the Quarter (IOQ) at an all-hands call onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola Nov. 8.
Yeoman 1st Class Anthony Mitchell from NETC Learning Site (LS) San Diego was selected as the SOQ and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Marie N. McHellon from NETC LS Kings Bay was selected as the IOQ.
As the leading petty officer for LS San Diego, Mitchell manages the coordination of correspondence for five globally dispersed learning sites. He is also the lead instructor for the Naval Instructor Training Course.
Originally from Lawton, Oklahoma, Mitchell has been in the Navy for 12 years.
“Students going through the instructor course want to know what to expect and if they’ll be ready to get in front of a classroom to provide useful instruction to both junior and senior students,” said Mitchell. “I take pride in being able to give students the tools that they'll need to succeed as instructors.
Mitchell’s supervisor, Senior Chief Yeoman Steven Newman, said Mitchell is able to juggle the demands of his job and still volunteer in the community after hours.
“Petty Officer Mitchell has the unique ability to connect with his students, keep track of all regional administrative requirements, and fill various collateral duties,” said Newman. “He has made a tremendous impact on the quality of the Navy's future instructors and on our command.”
McHellon is the leading petty officer at LS Kings Bay/Mayport and in addition to managing the day-to-day schoolhouse operations, she is the course supervisor for the Navy Instructor Training Course.
Originally from Atlanta, McHellon said it is a humbling experience to be part of the Navy’s future creating Sailors who will be future leaders. She believes strongly in the NETC motto, ”Fleet Readiness Starts Here.”
“Every time I am given the opportunity to instruct, I have a chance to influence the Navy and leave my footprint behind,” said McHellon. “Training is at the pinnacle of all the decisions of Navy warfighters.”
“Petty Officer McHellon does an excellent job of engaging with her students and motivating them to succeed,” said Lt. Jonathan Madary, the Kings Bay LS officer in charge. “It is apparent that she is a motivated Sailor constantly looking to better herself.”
An IOQ is selected for how they exemplify Navy core values while on and off duty. McHellon’s immediate career goal is to become a Navy chief petty officer.
The IOQ and SOQ programs are designed to recognize and reward the performance and dedication of outstanding enlisted Sailors.
NETC is the largest shore command in the Navy and is comprised of more than 12,000 military and staff personnel at more than 230 subordinate activities and detachments in the United States and at remote sites overseas. NETC provides training and education to more than 31,000 students on any given day.
