The Air Force Drill Team performed for students at John Adams High School in Queens, New York Nov. 8, 2017.
The Drill Team performed multiple times for high school students, showcasing their talent and precision. Afterward, the team answered questions.
More than 400 students watched the ceremonial guardsmen today, said Master Sgt. Nephtali Robles, aerospace science instructor with the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps at John Adams High School.
The Ceremonial Guardsmen were able to present one of the many opportunities the Air Force has available for recent high school graduates as well as build lasting relationships with the community.
“It’s something I wish I would’ve been able to experience in high school to give those students that opportunity,” said Senior Airman Jeremy De Leon, a ceremonial guardsman with the 11th Operations Group. “Interacting with them makes me feel like I’m actually making a difference in their lives whether I inspire one student or a gym full.”
Airmen undergo a rigorous selection process to become ceremonial guardsmen.
To join the drill team they have to pass an interview in basic training, pass honor guard tech school, go through a ceremonial training unit and then they could try out for the Air Force Drill Team, said Master Sgt. Anthony Grass Honor Guard Operations Superintendent with the 11th Operations Group.
The drill team performed at the school as part of a weeklong trip to the city culminating in the Veterans Day parade in Manhattan and a New York Knicks basketball game performance on Saturday night.
