FORT CARSON, Colorado – Soldiers of the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, hit the ground running since returning from Eastern Europe in support of Atlantic Resolve.
“While deployed, we worked up to the very last moment,” said 2nd Lt. Edward Garibay, the warehouse officer in charge for Alpha Company, 64th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd ABCT, 4th Inf. Div. “At a certain point, we had to turn off the flow of parts and supplies in preparation for our redeployment back to Fort Carson.”
Garibay and his Soldiers were back at home station for only one month when they started accumulating a back-log of parts and supplies.
“Within a short period, when the parts flow was switched off and turned back on over here, we had a substantial amount of backlog at the warehouse,” said Garibay. “We had hundreds of pallets of parts that we had to catch up on. Every day, from the day that we came back, we received on average, at least 50 to 60 pallets a day that we had to keep up with.”
Within that month, the Soldiers worked hard on catching up and ensuring each battalion received their allocation of parts and supplies.
“In about thirty days, we were able to process through a thousand pallets,” said Garibay.
Spc. Ayobami Olatunji, an automated logistical specialist and noncommissioned officer in charge for 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd ABCT, 4th Inf. Div., put his unit’s readiness before all others by proactively being first logistician in the entire brigade to receive his unit’s parts. By doing this, 1-8 Inf. Rgt. will be ready to conduct maintenance operations as soon as their combat platforms return from Europe.
Olatunji, within a week timeframe, received 10,049 parts for his unit. Each of those parts can build combat readiness by repairing vehicles ranging from a Humvee to a M1A2 Abrams Tank.
“I am very humbled and proud of Olatunji,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Lanorris Ford, a maintenance technician for 1-8 Inf. Rgt., 3rd ABCT, 4th Inf. Div. “He is a very mature Soldier and the epitome of a leader. He hit the ground running as soon as our equipment came in and managed the whole section, with limited resources.”
The 64th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd ABCT, 4th Inf. Div., runs the unit’s Supply Support Activity operations.
“We issue out parts and supplies to the battalions,” said Edward Garibay, the warehouse officer in charge for Alpha Company, 64th BSB, 3rd ABCT, 4th Inf. Div. “We are the funnel that shoots everything out that you will need to repair vehicles, and run day-to-day operations.”
The main goal for the time and effort put in to the Soldiers hard work is readiness.
“Our main mission is making sure that every single vehicle that has a part in our warehouse, is in the hands of the maneuver battalions,” said Garibay. “This will allow a speedy operation and enhance our readiness once the vehicles arrive from Germany.”
Because of lessons learned, the 64th BSB Soldiers can work a lot faster and more diligently.
“When we were in Europe, it took us at least four months to catch up on the back log,” said Garibay. “Now, it only takes us a month. Utilizing lessons learned, we’re set us up for success.”
“Our Soldiers are motivated now,” said Staff Sgt. Shaneika Cook, a warehouse noncommissioned officer in charge, for 64th BSB, 3rd ABCT, 4th Inf. Div. “The Soldiers have a lot more experience and we are able to manage our time a lot better too. It’s quite impressive to see these young Soldiers handle the influx of the workload and maintain a positive, prideful attitude.”
