Originally from Israel, Attias enlisted in the Army 20 years ago and is currently an 88M Truck Driver serving in the S-3 section with the 77th.
“I joined the Army because I thought it would be a good challenge,” said Attias. “I’m originally from Israel, my brother and sister both served in the Israeli Army, so I thought this would similar and allow me to serve my country as a US citizen.”
Her dream to be a race walker began in Israel 35 years ago with a goal to come to America and participate in the Olympics.
Race walking is a long distance discipline within the sport of athletics. Different from running, one foot must be in contact with the ground at all times.
“I wanted to make the U.S. Olympic team and got all the way to number 11 at the Olympic Trials in 1988,” said Attias. “Most athletes that train for the Olympics are able train full time, I had a job and it was very hard to maintain both.”
While she may not have made the Olympic team, her achievements are nothing short of remarkable.
Attias has posted a first place finish in national events including the US Grand Prix, NYC Marathon (Race Walk Division), Los Angeles, Honolulu and Disney.
Her specialty is now a 24 hour race and is the fifth Centurion in the country for females. The Centurion race walk consists of logging 100 miles in a 24 hour span.
“My goal is to be a Centurion on every continent,” said Attias. “That would be something incredible and I hope to achieve that within the next 10 years.”
Most recently, Attias finished in the top spot once again in a run walk National Championship. She won in the 10K, 20K and 30K division for her age group.
Attias’s next major competition is January, in California for a 50K that she hopes to win.
While I may be 55 years old, it’s really all about how you feel,” said Attias. “It’s never too late to start a sport in competition and remember the body is amazing, until you try you will never know”
In addition to race walking and serving as an Army Reservist, Attias stays busy on the civilian side working in the town of Lakewood, NJ for the Public Works Department and as an Animal Control Officer. She also volunteers in her community as firefighter and serves on various boards to include the Jewish War Veterans Council of NJ and Woman in the Military.
