26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable)

U.S. Marines and Sailors with the Maritime Raid Force, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, conducted a night raid at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Oct. 26, 2017.

The raid was conducted to familiarize and hone the unit’s Close Quarters Tactics (CQT) in a simulated urban environment. The MRF executed the raid at night by patrolling through the woods into the Military Operations on Urbanized Terrain (MOUT) town, utilizing night vision equipment and AN/PEQ-15 Advanced Target Pointer/Illuminator/Aiming Laser systems to move through and clear buildings of simulated enemy forces.

“Today, we are focused on the assisted capture of a simulated high-value individual in MOUT town,” said Sgt. Cory A. Marshall, a squad leader with the MRF. “This kind of training gets the Marines used to working with the reconnaissance Marines and the kind of missions we may come across on deployment.”

The MRF has been conducting tactics training and simulated raids since the MEU started its pre-deployment training program, an intensive six-month training program focused on a mission-essential task list and interoperability with the joint and special operations forces.

Capt. Cory R. Moyer, a platoon commander with the MRF, said that after executing their initial plan, the unit was able to identify discrepancies that needed to be addressed. Once addressed they reassessed and re-engaged the next objective, he continued.

The raid eventually led to a simulated firefight between role-players and the MRF in MOUT town; utilizing the CQT they learned from earlier training to efficiently capture and defeat the opposing forces.

“I’m expecting the Marines to employ everything they learned from the CQT courses, including breaching and room clearing,” Marshall said. “Along with our current skillset, this should be enough to disable any enemy forces we may come across.”

The MRF is preparing to participate in Combined Composite Training Unit Exercise, the final training evolution prior to the 26th MEU’s upcoming deployment at sea. MEUs operate continuously across the globe and provide the President of the United States and the unified combatant commanders with a forward-deployed, flexible and responsive sea-based Marine Air Ground Task Force. Always ready when the nation is least ready.
