By the Multi-National Force – Iraq
BAGHDAD, Iraq – Multi-National Force – Iraq, Task Force 134, the organization responsible for coalition detainee operations in Iraq, announced the start of focused releases of detainees in recognition of the coming period of Hajj. In Islam, Oct. 30 to Nov. 30, 2008, is known as the month of Dhul-Qi'dah, the time of preparation (for the Hajj).
This year the Hajj will span, Dec. 6–11, 2008, and will include the celebratory period of Eid al-Adha.
"In the spirit of goodwill, and in recognition of this special time for most Iraqis, 2,000 detainees will be released during Dhul-Qi'dah; getting these detainees home in time for the Hajj and following Eid al-Adha" said BG David Quantock, MNF-I deputy commanding general – Detainee Operations and CG of Task Force 134.
The focus of these releases will be those detainees who no longer pose an imperative threat to Iraqi citizens or the government of Iraq. Also, every effort will be made to release or transfer the special population detainees, including the females, juveniles, and those detainees who have been diagnosed with terminal illnesses.
Quantock said, "we have learned in our time here in Iraq that this part of the year is very important to Iraqis, just as November and December constitute a special time for Americans. We are happy to continue our partnership with the Government of Iraq as they honor their commitment to their citizens and their religion."
Currently, there are about 17,300 detainees in coalition theater internment facilities; down dramatically from the high of about 26,000 in November 2007. Since the start of 2008, more than 15,400 detainees have been released to their families and communities.
