RENO, Nev. -- The Nevada Air National Guard’s 192nd Airlift Squadron, based here in Reno, flew a mission shuttling food and supplies to Puerto Rico on Wednesday, October 18.

Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico in September, marring the tropical island, and left it without many of the basic necessities such as fresh water, power and a working airport.

The National Guard Bureau directed this humanitarian mission. Its purpose was to help Puerto Ricans recover from Hurricane Maria by providing basic necessities.

Maj. David McNally, a pilot assigned to the 192nd Airlift Wing, and six other crew members from the Nevada Air Guard, along with a C-130 Hercules aircraft were tasked to shuttle nearly 200 tons of food, water and supplies from Travis Air Force base, Calif., to Muñiz Air National Guard base, Puerto Rico.

To move this amount of humanitarian supplies requires a team of planes. Each plane repeating the basic flight path several times. Pick-up supplies at Travis Air Force base, fly to a rest location, fly to Florida, then fly to Puerto Rico to drop-off, and repeat.

McNally said two other crews from the Nevada Air National Guard, along with Wyoming and Montana Air Guard units, helped with this mission.

This expedition was the last run McNally and his team flew for the Puerto Rico humanitarian mission. The flight departed the Nevada Air Guard base on Wednesday and headed to Travis Air Force base, where they picked up a load of food and water. From Travis Air Force base, they continued to Phoenix, Ariz., where they rested for the night.

The next day, they headed to MacDill Air Force base, Fla. There they picked up additional supplies. The crew stayed the night and rested.

Friday morning, the crew departed MacDill Air Force base and flew the arduous flight over the Atlantic Ocean to Puerto Rico. Immediately after landing, aerial porters, assigned to the Nevada Air National Guard’s 152nd Aerial Port, who’d deployed in September to Puerto Rico to provide assistance, along with Bucaneros Air Guardsmen from Puerto Rico, started unloading the supplies.

In total, in support of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, the 192nd Airlift Squadron crews flew 88 sorties and logged over 370 flying hours during the two months of hurricane support.

Nevada aerial porters were some of the first to respond to Puerto Rico to help get the Muñiz Air National Guard base up and running.

McNally said, “The whole National Guard is coming together to help out Puerto Rico to get over this craziness.”
