Soldiers join El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank to give back

El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank believes that no one should suffer from hunger and made it their mission to collect and distribute food through the region of El Paso since 2012.
For a few of these soldiers, volunteering is a normal occurrence and has a personal significance.
“I used to be homeless,” said Spc. Robert Castro, automated logistics specialist, 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 3D ABCT, 1AD. “My mom would come to these food shelters and get food, so when they said that they needed help I raised my hand to help.”
Helping to sort and pack the food was more difficult than it sounds. A lot of attention to detail was needed to ensure efficiency of distribution to the region.
In packing the food, they needed to separate and weigh each type of food into different boxes. The types were cans, dry foods, snacks, condiments, and cereals. This helped when putting the boxes on different pallets for distribution.
Also, soldiers needed to look for openings in the donated packages and dents in cans. Failure to do so may result in illnesses, which would defeat the purpose of helping the community.
Ripped packages were disposed of, but the cans were rid of their labels and donated to a pig farm.
Even with all of the steps of packing, these soldiers and their family were able to complete the mission.
“It’s awesome to have this many people,” said Pvt. Mason Landeros, combat medic specialist, 3D ABCT, 1AD. “Packing this food wouldn’t get out any faster without this many volunteers.”
One of the many volunteers was six-year-old Layla Lewis who asked her mom, Capt. Mechelle Lewis, 3D ABCT, 1AD, if she could do this all the time.
Landeros is also someone who is going to do this all the time and offered advice to his fellow soldiers.
“Volunteer!,” said Landeros. “It’s better than sitting home and playing video games.”
