Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is partnering with Duke Energy in a utilities energy savings contract to survey buildings for energy saving measures. One cost-saving measure for both newer and renovated barracks, is a film installed onto windows that helps improve insulation and helps save on energy costs.

“They’re called Low-E Coatings,” said Mark Maddox, a maintenance supervisor at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “A lot of the time you’ll see that glass has a little bit of a green tint to it; that’s high efficiency glass.”

A downside of the coating is that it can interfere with cell phone signals, resulting in occupants opening windows which defeats the purpose of the film.

“We had guys using their cell phones as hot spots to game in their rooms, so they would leave their phones by their window and open them,” said Maddox. “That allows water to intrude into the building which causes damage. In order to maintain the building (and improve cellular coverage), we’re looking to install cell phone repeaters.”

Camp Lejeune is coordinating the installation of Interior Cellular Enhancement systems which enhance interior cellular coverage in affected buildings. A survey will be available for Marines and Sailors to determine whether a building is impacted by the insulation film and requires the ICE systems.

“That survey is going to help determine which buildings we target for the energy conservation measure,” said Melissa Attlee, an energy ethos coordinator. “Any barracks that have the film that specifically blocks cell phone signals are the ones that are high on our priority list.”

The survey includes both Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River. The installations want to improve the quality of life for as many Marines and Sailors as they can.

Marines and Sailors are encouraged to fill out the survey to ensure every building in need of the ICE system receives it. The survey can be reached online at https://www.surveylegend.com/s/fl3.
