Seminar Unveils the ‘Anatomy of an Attack’ for DOD Employees

Defense Acquisition University’s (DAU) Cybersecurity Enterprise Team (CET) provided an hour-long seminar discussing the "Anatomy of an Attack" at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) Old Town Complex for over 165 military members, government civilians and contractors on Nov. 1.

The "Anatomy of an Attack" was one of the themes the U.S. Navy explored in October during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The purpose of this annual initiative is to raise awareness about cybersecurity and increase the resiliency of the nation in the event of a cyber incident. According to Department of Defense guidance, cybersecurity is one of the United States' most important national security priorities and every individual has a role to play.

"During the month of October, organizations across the Navy disseminated information through articles, videos, social media and graphics to educate and inform Navy personnel and partners on this vital security issue," said Craig Madsen, SPAWAR national competency lead for program management and seminar coordinator. "Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility and intrinsic to everything we do at SPAWAR, so this seminar contributes to unity of effort across the enterprise as we address persistent threats to our networks, weapons systems, and industrial base."

The seminar spotlighted various topics including, Addressing the Known and Unknown Threat; Attacker's Motivation and Skills; Attacker's Kill Chain; Defender's and Attacker's Dilemma; and Techniques to Defend.

"I hope that attendees will take the lessons learned during the seminar and bring the knowledge back to their offices for further conversation," said Curt Gordon, a SPAWAR cybersecurity analyst. "The cybersecurity mission continues to evolve and we all need to do our part to make our businesses, installations and personal networks resilient to cyber breeches or attacks."
