    5th Medical Recruiting Battalion

The San Antonio Medical Recruiting Company welcomed a new first sergeant in a change of responsibility ceremony Oct. 27 at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.
Incoming 1st Sgt. Leon W. Bright assumed duty as the company’s senior enlisted leader from outgoing 1st Sgt. Timothy J. Britt, who has served as first sergeant since July 2015.
The duties won’t be new to Bright, who most recently served as first sergeant of the Kansas City Medical Recruiting Center in Overland Park, Kansas. Now, he takes on a unit that was not only selected as the top medical recruiting company in U.S. Army Recruiting Command for 2017 but also one of its medical recruiting center leaders named as.
With their past successes in mind, Bright aims to keep up the momentum and keep the focus on Soldier and Family readiness.
“One thing I take dear to heart is putting Family first,” said Bright. “I’m a firm believer that if your Family is happy at home you will do your job (better).”
He said it’s a given that taking care of Family includes an emphasis on Soldier wellness, particularly with the operational tempo inherent to recruiting.
“As a leader the welfare of Soldiers is at the top of the list,” Bright explained. “If not, then you don’t need to be a leader. San Antonio is one of those companies that any leader would want ... They have everything they need to be successful.”
The company supports Soldiers assigned to five centers located in Texas and Oklahoma. They recruit medical students, licensed physicians and chaplains for service in the Army and Army Reserve.
Quick to deflect credit for the company’s success, Britt proudly points to the dogged commitment to the mission shown by the company’s Soldiers and civilians.
“It’s all about them,” he said. “We have a great team and they want to win. They’re doing the right things when nobody’s looking, and because of that they have a lot of success no matter who is the first sergeant.”
Britt heads to Fort Knox, Ky., to be the 3rd Medical Recruiting Battalion S-3/Operations Noncommissioned Officer.
