113th Wing D.C. Air National Guard

Just over a quarter of the way through the NFL season, members of the Washington Redskins took time out of their busy schedule to learn more about the mission and capabilities of the District of Columbia Air National Guard on Oct. 30. The visit brought Guard members face-to-face with Ondre Pipkins (74), Anthony Lanier II (72), Ryan Grant (14) and former player, Kyshoen Jarrett.

“They are protecting and serving for a good cause that’s impacting more than just their families,” said Lanier, a defensive lineman in his second year.

In addition to signing autographs and banners, Lanier and other players learned firsthand about the 113th Wing’s mission, global impact and defense capabilities in the National Capital Region as the premier militia responsible for 24/7 air defense of the nation’s capital.

“We work for the city … primarily for any national security event that happens downtown — when the Pope visits, the inauguration, State of the Union address — anytime there’s a giant group of people downtown on the National Mall they call on the National Guard,” said Brig. Gen. Jeffrey C. Bozard, 113th Wing commander, who offered visiting players a tour of the installation.

The tour included stops to the 113th Operation Support Squadron for aircrew emergency egress simulator training (an annual training all National Guard pilots must complete), before concluding the tour with a close look at F-16 Fighting Falcons maintained by members of the 113th Maintenance Squadron.

“I feel like they were very much interested in our mission and in the larger role that we serve,” said Tech. Sgt. Christopher Germuth an aircraft ordnance systems mechanic. “I think we changed perspectives on what the military does.”

“Being a lifelong Washington Redskins fan, it’s great to see them in person while being afforded the opportunity to show them what we do,” said Chief Master Sgt. Paul Sullivan, another self-described Redskins loyalist. As for predictions in light of the Redskins current 3-4 record this season, “I’m with this team every week no matter what.”
