KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- Editor’s Note: The Airman Spotlight is a monthly feature with the goal of highlighting Airmen who are contributing to the 403rd Wing’s mission accomplishment and making a difference in the lives of others.

Senior Airman Cayce Bennett is an aircraft structural maintenance technician who specializes in sheet metal with the 403rd Maintenance Squadron. He’s a full-time Air Reserve Technician, which means he wears the Air Force uniform every day but is a federal government employee during the week and a traditional reservist during unit training assemblies.

Bennet has been a Reserve Citizen Airman for four years and has been with the 403rd Wing since September 2016. He said he originally tried to join active duty, but it was during a time when single parents were not allowed to serve in the active force.

“That rule was later repealed, but I definitely got the better end of the deal by going Reserve and taking an ART position,” Bennett said. “I grew up surrounded with a military family from admin to special ops. I had been looking forward to my military career for the educational benefits, the comradery, and the job experience.”

He recently completed Airman Leadership School and is furthering his education by enrolling at Embry Riddle University. He was coined by Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright Wednesday, named 403rd Wing Airman of the fourth quarter in 2016, and received the 81st Training Wing’s Dragon Award for junior service member of the quarter in 2016.

Bennett is also dedicated to helping his community by volunteering for the Habitat for Humanity and also helped construct two wheelchair ramps for an elderly residence, creating safer access.

“Airman Bennett is an outstanding technician with concrete mission focus and dedication to Air Force training objectives and missions,” said Senior Master Sgt. Steven Connors, 403rd MXS structural shop supervisor. “He is highly proficient with all equipment operations required in structural repair processes. His unrelenting drive and performance makes him an asset to the structural shop and a role model for all other Airmen.”

Bennett said before he moved here he hadn’t heard a lot about Keesler but that he’s impressed by the 403rd Wing’s mission capabilities, the people and the resources.

“I would have to say my favorite part of being part of the 403rd is the interaction between everyone here. People are always looking out for one another the way that the Wingman concept was meant to be implemented,” Bennett said. “I have had such a strong mentorship force both in my shop and within the unit as a whole.”
