KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- Editor’s note: This is the fourth of a six-part series featuring each member of the 403rd Wing’s “krewe” of recruiters. Air Force Reserve recruiters find and vet future Reserve Citizen Airmen. Their job is important because they are responsible for ensuring each new recruit has what it takes to contribute to the Air Force Reserve mission of providing combat-ready forces to fly, fight and win.
Senior Master Sgt. Dominique Hogan, 403rd Wing Recruiting flight chief, has been in the military more than 17 years and began her career as a Marine in the military police career field she then switched branches and joined Air Force security forces and eventually transitioned into the Air Force Reserve. In 2009, she became a recruiter and has been the flight chief since 2016.
Hogan answered the following questions about her experience as a recruiter.
Why did you want to become a recruiter? People would always say to me, “you should be a recruiter,” but it wasn’t until I was invited to attend an Order of the Sword ceremony for Col. Francis Mungavin and was seated at a table of recruiters that I really considered it. They were excited and motivated and a good group of people so I thought, “I’ll give this a try.” I also love telling my story about how the Air Force Reserve changed my life and all the opportunities available. Now I’m flight chief for the Hurricane Hunters, Flying Jennies and all the outstanding 403rd squadrons. How cool is that?
What’s the biggest advice you’d give to a new recruit? Your destiny is what you make it in the Air Force Reserve. You can decide to be a mediocre Airman or you can decide to maximize the opportunity. You have life experiences that others might not have. Going on temporary duty assignments and deployments are the experiences you’re not going to get anywhere else. It’s not just one weekend a month, it’s bigger than that.
What advice would you give someone who wanted to be a recruiter? Understand that it’s probably one of the most demanding but most rewarding jobs in the Air Force. Your first year there’s so much you have to learn and you might not spend a lot of time at home, but after the first few years you can see the Airmen you put in and the work they’re doing.
