Every Marine has a mission. What that mission is depends on what the Marine Corps asks of them. For Capt. Brandon Regan, that mission meant becoming a prosecutor for the Complex Trial Counsel team aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
“I knew early on I wanted to be a Marine, and then in college I kind of figured out I wanted to be a lawyer, so being a judge advocate gave me the opportunity to do both,” said Regan.
Regan takes his mission as a trial counsel seriously.
“(Regan) is extremely professional and extremely proficient,” said Lt. Col. John P. Norman, the Regional Trial Counsel. “He’s one of my best trial counsel. In fact he’s one of the best trial counsels in this region.”
Regan has worked hard at his job and it shows through his success.
“We have an award for the best trial counsel of the year, it’s called the Trial Counsel of the Year award, and he won that last year,” said Norman.
Because of his hard work and dedication Regan is now part of the Complex Trial Team. According to Norman, the team handles the most complex cases in the Marine Corps.
“It’s a little bit of a change of pace,” said Regan. “I’m still a prosecutor, but I get the opportunity to try some of the obviously more complex cases. We get a lighter case load, so you get to really focus more on actually trying your cases. They tend to be a little bit more serious, some of the more righteous cases, so it’s a cool opportunity to try some high-level military justice cases.”
Continuing his hard work, Regan was selected to compete in the second annual Marine Corps Litigator of the Year event which lasted from Sept. 18 to Sept. 22 and was held at the American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C.
“It was really good training,” said Regan. “There were a lot of civilian practitioners there that had a ton of experience that was helpful for our practice of law.”
Regan won the 2017 Brigadier General Michael E. Rich Litigator of the Year Award after weeks of preparation.
“He’s never not prepared, and it went a long way in helping him to win it,” said Norman. “I saw him stay late every day after he finished his own work for the day, and he was working on getting ready for the competition.”
Regan hands his success to his leadership.
“I’ve had some really great leadership since I’ve been here and some good mentors,” said Regan. “The only reason I had any success is because of the mentors I’ve had and the guys that I work with. (Norman) has been my main mentor, and literally taught me everything I know. I was glad to win it to affirm all of his hard work in me.”
Regan also has another person to thank for his success.
“A lot of what I do, I’m able to do because my wife is so supportive,” said Regan. “She stays at home with our kids, and makes it possible for me to work long hours and have any success.”
