U.S. military service members and city officials attended the 7th annual Senior Leaders Seminar at the Marines’ Memorial Club Theatre and the U.S. Navy ship USS Essex during San Francisco Fleet Week in San Francisco, Calif., Oct. 4-5, 2017. During the two-day seminar, speakers and panelists discussed humanitarian assistance and disaster response capabilities in preparation for earthquakes in San Francisco. The panelists talked about identifying the unintended negative effects of disaster relief and humanitarian assistance and how to fix the problems and make assistance more streamlined and effective.

Keynote speaker Sebastian Junger, an author, filmmaker and combat journalist, introduced the film “Hell on Earth: The Fall of Syria and the Rise of ISIS”, a compilation of first-hand footage from the war in Syria chronicles the conflict and the rise of ISIS. The refugee crisis is explored through the film’s footage of two families’ journey to escape the violence. Junger had a question and answer session with Jane Wales, the CEO of World Affairs Council, where they answered the audience's questions about the movie and the situations with refugees and the war in Syria.

The seminar closed on the first day with a capability tour of USS Essex and a mixer for those who attended.

During the second day of the seminar they gathered on USS Essex and the speakers discussed the importance of communication and up keeping relationships between emergency services.

Speakers discussed how smooth the setting up of the Shock Trauma Platoon Field Surgical Tent at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center was and how that can possibly save lives in the event of a natural disaster.

The seminar brings more than 150 government, military, and private sector leaders from all over the world for two days of sharing best practices through panel discussions, exercise reviews, and presentations. Emergency responders and military leaders also convened for tabletop and live-joint exercises, urban search and rescue training, and public education programs.

San Francisco Fleet Week presents a valuable opportunity for emergency responders, state and local government agencies, and the military to build key relationships in order to enhance our overall level of disaster preparedness. The two-day senior leader seminar provided the networking between the military and city officials to ensure they be more prepared to handle the next natural disaster and save lives.
