    Spartans lead the way at 2017 Marne Marksmanship Competition

    Soldiers from across the Marne Division put their marksmanship skills to the test at the 2017 Marne Marksmanship Competition Sept. 25-27, 2017, at Fort Stewart, Ga.

    Winners of the competition are scheduled to represent the Marne Division in the United States Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) Marksmanship Competition this October at Fort Bragg. The competition was broken down into three categories; the M4 carbine, M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), and the M9 Pistol.

    During the competition, contestants were tested on individual marksmanship skills with his or her assigned weapon.
    “The Soldiers who competed in the M4 carbine and M9 pistol categories were placed in situations to simulate battlefield stress,” said, Sgt. 1s t Class Anthony M. Kizziah, marksmanship coach with 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. . “They conducted foot marches and completed multiple exercises to elevate their heart rate before firing.”

    Contestants of the M249 SAW category participated in two machine gun qualification tables, two stress shoots, and two grouping and zero competitions.
    When the barrel smoke settled, it was the Spartan Brigade on top winning all three categories of the Marne Marksmanship competition.

    Pfc. Rhett M. Giese, an infantryman with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 2nd IBCT, 3rd ID, winner of M249 SAW event. Pvt. Ronald J. Wright, a cavalry scout with Charlie Troop, 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd IBCT, 3rd ID, winner of M4 carbine event. 2nd Lt. Andrew S. Clanton, an armor officer with HHC, 6-8 CAV, 2nd IBCT, 3rd ID, winner of M9 pistol category.
    All three Spartans won each of their respective event with a double-digit advantage over the next competitor.

    “The winners will continue to train here at Fort Stewart” said Kizziah. “We want them to take advantage of every range available to refine the fundamentals before competing against Soldiers at the FORSCOM marksmanship competition this October.
