    BAGHDAD, Iraq – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers discovered multiple weapons caches during combined patrols Oct. 14, 2008 in the Hayy Furat and Abu T'shir communities of southern Baghdad's Rashid District.

    At approximately 11 a.m. Soldiers serving with Company E, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, seized a munitions cache in the West Rashid District of Baghdad. The munitions included an 8-inch explosively-formed penetrator, two improvised rocket rails, a smoke grenade, a 60 mm mortar round, two AK-47 magazines with armor piercing rounds, two AK-47 magazines with ball ammunition, approximately 300 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, 1,000 rounds of linked 7.62 mm ammunition and various bomb-making materials.

    At approximately 2:15 p.m., Soldiers of Company C, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad, reported finding a 75 mm rocket-propelled grenade with a homemade launcher and improvised explosive device-making materials, after searching an area in the Furat community of West Rashid based on a tip from a concerned Iraqi citizen.

    The Soldiers turned the materials over to a coalition forces explosives ordnance disposal unit and continued on their mission.

    At approximately 6:30 p.m., Soldiers from Troop C, 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regt., 1st BCT, 4th Inf. Div., MND-B, discovered two improvised-claymore mines in Abu T'shir while investigating an abandoned house based upon a tip from a concerned Iraqi citizen in southeastern Rashid. A coalition force EOD unit arrived to handle the mines.

    Soldiers from Co. C, 1st Bn., 22nd Inf. Regt., 1st BCT, 4th Inf. Div., seized an RPG, an RPG launcher, an AK-47 assault rifle, 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm ammunition and blasting caps at approximately 8:15 p.m. while searching an abandoned house in the Hayy Furat community of southern Baghdad's Rashid District. The patrol notified an EOD unit to handle the weapons cache.

    "The 1st Brigade continues to maintain a constant presence in the Rashid District to provide a safe and secure environment for the Iraqi people and to pressure the enemies of the free and sovereign government of Iraq," said Maj. Dave Olson, 1st BCT Spokesman, 4th Inf. Div., MND-B. "The Iraqi security forces are currently in the process of transitioning into the lead role in the Rashid District as they continue to improve in their capabilities to conduct independent operations."
