FORT LEE, Va. (Sept. 28, 2017) -- Fourteen educators from the Army Logistics University received the coveted Distinguished Instructor award during a ceremony in Green Auditorium Tuesday.

Of those, five earned additional recognition as instructor or Educator of the Year. They were: Dr. Mindy A. Perot, College of Professional and Continuing Education, Educator of the Year; Chaplain (Maj.) Vincent T. Myers, Staff and Faulty Department, Commissioned Officer of the Year; Chief Warrant Officer 3 Truman V. Ward, Technical Logistics College, Warrant Officer of the Year; Staff Sgt. Troy D. Johnson, Logistics NCO Academy, NCO of the Year; and Willie L. Lee Jr., Logistics Leader College, Civilian of the Year.

That group will compete at the Training and Doctrine Command level later this year.

Before the final winners were announced, Michael K. Williams, ALU president, said he was excited to find out who earned those top spots.

“We have a very talented group,” he said. “There’s no winners or losers. I’ve had the opportunity to walk around the classrooms and watch our instructors do some incredible things.

Williams said he is proud of the instructors who teach at ALU.

“We are blessed that we have the opportunity to teach our future logisticians, and one of our nation’s strategic advantages is we can deploy our forces all over the world,” he said. “We can sustain them because of the individuals sitting in those first two rows (in reference to the distinguished instructors).”

Williams – along with Col. Thomas Rogers, ALU commandant – presented the awards to the distinguished instructors. After the initial recognition, those selected as the top instructors and educator of the year were announced.

Each year, the names of those selected are considered a top secret within the university, and this year was no different. Ward – who earned the top warrant officer nod – said it was a complete surprise to him.

“I was really, really happy when I did hear my name called,” he said. “During the board, I did exactly what was taught during my (instructor) courses. It wasn’t a big difference for me because that’s how I teach every day.

“For most of the questions they asked, I did (that task) a day prior in the class I taught,” Ward continued. “If you’re an instructor who wants to be worth his or her weight in gold, you’re going to be constantly doing those things in the classroom. Thus, it shouldn’t be a rigorous process when you’re in front of the board because you’re already doing them.”
