RENO – Chaplain Maj. Donald R. Crandell, assigned to the 152nd Airlift Wing here in Reno, earned the Accredited Speaker Award Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Toastmasters International Convention in Vancouver, Canada.

Toastmasters International has awarded 75 Accredited Speaker designations since 1981.

Crandell said the Accredited Speaker is a rare and prestigious designation.

He found out he was a finalist May 19, the night before he competed in the District 39 International contest in Anderson, California, Crandell said.
Prior to finding out he was a finalist, Crandell had to go through an arduous verifying and application process.

Candidates, before submitting their application for the Accredited Speaker, must have presented over 25 speeches over the past three years. Fifteen of those speeches must have been to audiences of 20 people or more and the audience members must have paid to hear the presentation.

When submitting the application, five endorsement letters from the 15 paid speeches must accompany the application. Also a video of the paid speech must accompany the application.

Applications are carefully reviewed by five anonymous judges. A speech must have an average score of at least 70 to advance to the next level.

The next level for Crandell was giving his final presentation, “It's All About Connection," in front of an audience of 300 people, including another panel of five new anonymous judges at the International Conference Accredited Speaker forum.

The speech teaches audience members how to be more natural, likeable and confident.

When asked what he plans to do next, Crandell said, “I want to continue working as a professional speaker, but I’m not yet ready to quit my day job.” “I also plan on competing to be the World Champion of Public Speaking. I will continue speaking as much as possible, in as many venues as possible, to be the best speaker I can possibly be.”
