Veterans who attended the event were able to receive various beneficial services such as job opportunities, free legal advice, information on attaining a higher education with the GCC and even a free haircut with lunch.
“This is the fifth annual Stand Up for Veterans event where more than 100 different organizations came together to support the veterans,” said Jerry Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale. “The idea behind the event was to help veterans deal with the issues they face daily and address issues that have been missed in the past. Each year the event gets larger with people who keep coming back and it’s not just the veterans, but the supporters as well.”
During the event multiple volunteer groups assisted the veterans to different locations on the campus that were filled with helpful and informational stations.
“Before the veterans know where to go, they are directed toward the registration table where they are signed into the data entry portion program,” said Jonathon Talarchyk, Volunteer. “Once the registrations are done, we are able to direct them by giving them a map with descriptions of all the services provided, while getting to know them on a more personal level.”
When entering the data entry portion of the event veterans were given a registration form for demographic information purposes that helped give specific details on why they were attending the event.
“To me it isn’t just about helping those who were in the military 30 to 40 years ago, but also trying to make a difference for those who are still serving,” Weiers said. “Ideally the goal would be to not have to do something for the veterans because they wouldn’t need it, but that’s just not the case. The goal is to have more cities work together to create more opportunities for these veterans and make a difference in their lives.”
Luke benefits from an outstanding relationship with our local communities and the “Stand Up for Veterans” event was another demonstration of that.
