DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. – Members of the 436th Communications Squadron are in the process of upgrading approximately 4,200 networked desktop and laptop computers from Microsoft Windows 7 to Windows 10 Secure Host Baseline here, by Dec. 1, 2017, a deadline set by Air Mobility Command for all computers within the command.

In a memo dated Feb. 26, 2016, Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work directed all DOD departments to rapidly deploy and transition from Windows 7 to Windows 10 SHB.

DOD Chief Information Officer Terry Halvorsen stated that the use of a single operating system across the DOD will help improve cybersecurity and help reduce information technology costs.

“All computers are required to be updated to Windows 10 SHB whether it’s connected to the base network or standalone,” said Krystal Henry, 436th CS base equipment control officer. “There will be some work center computers that will not be updated to Windows 10 due to software compatibility and a Plan of Action and Milestones must be submitted by the Information Technology Equipment Custodian responsible for that asset.”

Implementation of Windows 10 SHB rollout to Dover assets fall in three categories: warehouse, servicing or legacy solutions.

For warehouse solution assets, “the work center ITEC is responsible for ensuring that a Work Order Management System work order has been submitted requesting a technical refresh of their assets. Upon receipt, current in-stock assets are processed through the warehouse and added to the ITEC's account for accountability purposes,” said Henry. “Basically it’s a ‘one-for-one’ swap with an out-of-warranty or a non-compatible Windows 10 asset for a new asset with Windows 10 software version 5.3 SHB.”

The servicing solution pertains to the 1,026 Dover assets already running on Windows 10 SHB software version 5.2 requiring an upgrade to version 5.3. There is no user interaction required, only the need for users to ensure that the computer remains powered up and users log off versus just removing their Common Access Card.

“This is a four-hour push and is completed by the 561st Network Operations Squadron, Peterson AFB, Colorado, through System Center Configuration Manager,” said Staff Sgt. Eric Rzepa, 436th CS Comm Focal Point NCO in charge. “Currently we are working with the 373d Training Squadron, 436th Airlift Wing, 436th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 436th Maintenance Squadron and 436th Aerial Port Squadron that have Windows 10 5.3 assets and have reported no out of the ordinary problems to date.”

The third solution requiring a “total wipe and reload” of the operating system is the legacy solution, and requires users of a work center asset to back up their data files prior to an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, a 90-minute configuration process.

With all three servicing solutions available, Client Service Technicians, CFP personnel and unit internal CSTs with administrative privileges, have the capability to deploy up to 250 assets per week with Windows 10 to unit ITECs.

“The ITEC will also be the front line to assist with any problems that arise during an asset upgrade,” said Henry. “If problems arise and they do not have a unit CST with administrative privileges, they will work with the base CST/CFP team to work through the issues that arise. This will typically be completed through a remedy ticket submission.”

“With the Dec. 1 deadline around the corner, this Windows 10 solution is a team effort between the BECO, the CST Team, the unit CST and ITECs,” said Henry.
