CAMP STRIKER, Iraq – Sheikhs and other community representatives joined coalition and Iraqi army leadership as the IA assumed control of another patrol base from coalition forces in Sayifiyah, Oct. 9, 2008.

Company C, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) handed over Patrol Base Dezil to 4th Co., 3rd Bn., 23rd Bde., 17th IA Div.

"It's a happy occasion to celebrate today the transition of another base from [coalition] forces to be under the control of the Iraqi army," said Lt. Col. Hatim, 3/23/17th commander. "This could not happen unless we have confidence in the ability of the Iraqi security levels achieved amongst the Iraqi army in the area. And that was achieved with the efforts of our American friends, the Iraqi army and the good people in the area, dignitaries and the sheikhs."

Hatim said the IA will work hard to sustain the security gains made over the past months.

"Today marks an exciting day for both the American people and the citizens of Iraq," said Capt. Joe Johnson, commander of Co. C, 1-187th Inf. Regt. "The cooperation between coalition forces, the Iraqi army and the local community has secured this area and allowed the citizens of Sayifiyah to restore their community. We are extremely grateful for your support in ridding the area of al-Qaida and the establishment of free governance."

PB Dezil is the second patrol base 1-187th Inf. Regt. has transitioned within a week.

The 3rd BCT, 101st Abn. Div. (AASLT) will transfer eight more patrol bases in the coming weeks.
