Story by Pfc. Alexes Anderson
On Aug. 17, 101st Airborne Division Sustainment Brigade, 101st Abn. Div., hosted a division unit ministry training event.
The division UMT conducts monthly training with a different brigade hosting each time.
“We’re doing combat-focused religious support training,” said Staff Sgt. Shenea Andrews, the brigade chaplain assistant with 101st Abn. Div. Sustainment Brigade. “The idea of the training is to build the knowledge of combat religious support amongst the UMTs.”
The training consisted of four lanes that includes UMT movement on a convoy, radio operations and sending a nine-line medical evacuation request, UMT security in a combat zone and convoy operations.
Andrews said the lanes provided training to the chaplains and chaplain assistants on various deployment and garrison operations for their military occupational specialty. “There is a plethora of information that needs to be known and … [a new private] isn’t going to learn anything he needs to by sitting in his office,” she said.
Spc. Gregory Miller, a chaplain assistant from 2nd Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 108th ADA Brigade, attached to the 101st Abn. Div. Sust. Bde., attended the training and agreed with Andrews.
“We’re stuck in an office all the time, so when we get out to do hands-on stuff, it’s good training,” Miller said.
The different training lanes, especially the radio operator class, helped Miller become a more proficient Soldier and chaplain assistant, he said.
“It’s a perishable skill, so being able to refresh your memory on that and learn how to actually work it is pretty good,” he said.
The training helped the chaplains and chaplain assistants of the division improve their tactical skills and better prepare for any upcoming deployments their units may face in the future.
