Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point

Marines were treated to an airshow of sorts at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Sept. 8, 2017 when a group of professional motocross riders took to the air on their high-powered two-wheel flying machines.
The motocross pros were here for “Semper Ride” – an event hosted by Marine Corps Community Services Cherry Point, designed to educate Marines on the importance of motorcycle safety.
“We’re here at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point doing the fifth in a series of five Semper Ride events,” said Jeff Tilton, the Semper Ride event coordinator. “We were in California and Virginia in the last couple of weeks and are in North Carolina this week.”
Semper Rides’ main focus is to spread a message of “Motorcycling the Right Way,” said Tilton. The event aims at this goal by hosting classes for Marines that feature guest speakers, slideshows and videos that cover motorcycle safety awareness.
“This gets their mind and focus on operating motorcycles safely and making safe decisions when they’re riding,” said Michael Small, the Cherry Point traffic safety manager. “It’s a benefit for the riders, definitely.”
After the presentations, things revved up outside in the theater parking lot as Marines watched three professional freestyle motocross riders demonstrate high-flying stunts and tricks.
It may not have been the Cherry Point biennial air show, but with nerve-wracking motorcycle aerobatics up to 35 feet in the air at distances reaching 75 feet…it might have been the next big thing.
