SAN DIEGO – Thirteen Sailors from Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet, Carrier Strike Group 15 (CSG 15), Carrier Strike Group 7 (CSG 7) and Tactical Training Group Pacific (TTGP) earned the title of "chief" during a chief petty officer (CPO) pinning ceremony held at U.S. 3rd Fleet headquarters, Sept. 14.

The ceremony followed a six-week training period known as CPO 365 Phase Two, which began when the CPO advancement results were released, Aug. 3. During Phase Two, the Chiefs Mess introduced those who were selected for advancement to chief petty officer to challenges designed to build on their leadership skills and provide a better understanding of what it means to be a Navy chief. Phase Two also included training on the history and traditions of a Navy chief, including the CPO Mess, tough physical challenges, mentorship, and many other responsibilities.

During the ceremony, Vice Adm. Nora Tyson, commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet, said the newly pinned chiefs should be proud of the accomplishments and sacrifices they’ve made that have gotten them to this point in their career.

"A Sailor’s career is separated by many significant events - the day you graduate basic training, when you graduate from ‘A’ school, crossing the brow of your first ship, hopefully facing the right direction, tacking on that first crow, but nothing is as significant as today - the day that you put on khakis and pin those anchors on your collar for the first time," said Tyson, who became an honorary chief during a ceremony in April.

Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet Command Master Chief Loran “Mark” Bather said it is now the newly pinned chiefs’ responsibility to represent the Chiefs Mess and train the Sailors shaping tomorrow’s Navy.

"These Sailors have been tested,” said Bather. “They’ve been accepted, and now they’re Navy chief petty officers. Being a chief in the Navy is one of the most significant milestones a Sailor can accomplish, and I know these chiefs will do great things for our Navy."

After receiving their anchors, each chief also received a combination cover signifying their new positions of leadership and responsibility.

"Becoming a chief is unlike becoming any other rank in the Navy," said Chief Information Systems Technician Jena Taliau, who was frocked to chief petty officer during the ceremony. "You get adopted into another family, and after the years of hard work and sacrifices I feel so lucky to be able to be a part of this today."

Navy chiefs are leaders who train Sailors and junior officers. Chief Culinary Specialist Jeffery Herrera, who also received his anchors today, said he directly attributes his leadership abilities and qualities to the support of the Sailors around him.

“Without the support from my chain of command I wouldn’t be the leader that I am today,” said Herrera. “They’ve taught me so much not only about what it means to be a leader but what it means to be a chief.”

U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy and constantly coordinates with U.S. 7th Fleet to plan and execute missions that promote ongoing peace, security, and stability throughout the Pacific theater of operations.
