The ceremony held to honor all New Mexican veterans began with the presentation of the colors, a performance of the national anthem, and with a flyover provided by the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office.
Brig. Gen. Thomas Bump, Director of the Joint Staff of the New Mexico National Guard, spoke about the importance of paying tribute to our military veterans and preserving their legacy of honor through service and remembrance.
“I am confident that those who are currently serving, and those who will come after us, will continue the legacy of honor that all of our veterans have charged us to uphold,” Bump said.
Bump was joined on stage by Alan Martinez, the deputy cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services, who thanked the military members in attendance and commented on the purpose of Military Appreciation Day at the Fair.
“This is your day,” Martinez said. “This is the day that the New Mexico State Fair shows their appreciation for your service to our country.”
He thanked the veterans on behalf of Dan Mourning, the general manager of the State Fair. “This is one of his favorite days,” Martinez said, “because he can pay back what you’ve already done for us.”
Several American Gold Star Mothers took to the podium to individually name every New Mexican veteran who has given their life in service from 2002 to today, including some of their own families.
Closing the reverent ceremony, the NMNG’s 44th Army Band played each branch's official song. They performed live music in the main pavilion throughout the day from traditional marching pieces to upbeat rock and mariachi songs.
All veterans and military members were given free admission to the fair.
