The Virgin Islands National Guard assisted the Department of Human Services and civilians from the island of Puerto Rico to transport supplies delivered by personal boats to St. Thomas in the wake of hurricane Irma, Tuesday September 12.
Organizers from Puerto Rico generously put together some supplies such as food, water, clothing and even mattresses to aid their neighboring U.S. territory after devastation caused by the category 5 storm.
“We aren’t with any businesses, companies, or any organizations of any sort, we are just individuals who were willing to do whatever it takes to help,” said Alana Harthman, a civilian who help to organize the supplies.
More than 40 boats docked one behind the other at Crown Bay, as members of the Virgin Islands National Guard and Department of Human Services worked together to load the supplies on to light
medium tactical vehicles and vehicles that were provided by a local company.
“When we have organizations, who want to donate items to the people of territory we have to try and account for all of the donated items, and then distribute them to the shelters, distribution points or we would go into the community and give them out, said Sandra Mason, the Department of Human Services Donation Coordinator.
Harthman said that Puerto Rico will continue to send over supplies every two weeks until the community is able to get back on its feet.
The Virgin Islands National Guard and its military partners continue to assist local and federal emergency responders in recovery efforts in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
