A small contingent of the Massachusetts Air National Guard was deployed to assist Texas as residents begin to clean up the aftermath Hurricane Harvey left behind.
Five members of the 104th Fighter Wing Medical Group, Health Risk Assessment Team, deployed to provide rest and recovery to the Texas Air National Guard team who responded initially to the needs of their community.
“Most of us have spent some length of time here because most of our schools are here in Texas and so to come back here to help is rewarding,” said Lt. Col. James Brown, a regional medical planner for the Massachusetts Homeland Response Force and 104th Fighter Wing. “The feeling to be able to provide and give back is indescribable.”
The team will be assessing the health risks for those who are working in the area due to possible contaminants in the air and water as the flood waters recede. They will be working side by side with their civilian counterparts to assess the risks.
The Airmen of the 104th FW will continue to track and coordinate requests for medical assets, what needs are still there, where they are coming in, and how they are going to get there. While medical logistics planning was a big part of the Texas Air National Guard initial response force, the 104th Fighter Wing is carrying the torch to ensure the Texas community continues to be cared for through every stage.
As Air National Guard bioenvironmental technicians, medical logistics coordinators, public health technicians, medical planners, and flight doctors they are trained to assist in the time of need for when large scale incidents occur.
“The Guard will remain on duty as long as we are needed,” said Col. James Suhr, 104th Fighter Wing Commander. “This is what we train for, and our readiness is at an utmost high to save lives at home, to fight our wars and to build partnerships.
Hurricane Harvey has been named the most hazardous land-falling tropical cyclone in the continental U.S. The hurricane dropped more than 51 inches of water in a 6-day period.
