PHOENIX – Hundreds of high school students were given the opportunity to engage first-hand with an interactive Special Operations Semi (AS2) tractor-trailer, Sept. 5, Moon Valley High School, Phoenix.

The event was hosted by recruiters from Phoenix North Recruiting Company, Phoenix Recruiting Battalion, who guided the students through the trailer, allowing them to witness and experience aspects of the Special Operations world.

The AS2 features a host of exhibits, including a Parachute Simulator, AH6 Little Bird Simulator, Weapons Display and a Ground Mobility Vehicle Drive Simulator.

The AS2 travels around the nation for 280 days a year, said Sgt. 1st Class Michael Collins, mobile exhibitor, United States Army Recruiting Command, who is currently assigned as one of the team chiefs to the vehicle.

“Our main mission is to support USAREC, SOAR (Special Operations Aviation Regiment), AMEDD (Army Medical Department) and JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps),” Collins said. “We also work a lot with the Golden Knights parachute team and the Army Shooting Team. We want to have special operations as visible as possible.”

The AS2 always draws large crowds and is popular, wherever they travel, Collins continued.

“We always get a great reaction wherever we go. This trailer is one of the best the Army has to offer in terms of interaction,” Collins said. “It’s very hands on. The parachute simulator is probably the most popular feature.”

The excitement of the displays has led to lots of Future Soldiers signing contracts, Collins said.

“It really gets them pumped up about wanting to join the Army,” he said. “I was a recruiter for eight years and then I was selected to be in charge of the AS2. I love what I do.”

Collins said he had to go through four interviews to be selected for the detail and enjoys the interaction with students.

“It’s great seeing them learning about the Army and being exposed to elements of it they normally wouldn’t be,” Collins added. “I like being on the road doing this. I’ve been in the Army 22 years and only have two left, so this is a good career ender.”
