Marine Air Control Group (MACG) 38 celebrated its 50th anniversary at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, Sept. 1.

During the ceremony, Col. Jeff Vandaveer, commanding officer of MACG-38, recognized the group’s 50th anniversary and rededicated its battle colors, commending past achievements and looking forward to future accomplishments.

With a formation, color guard and refreshments, service members and guests took time to recognize MACG-38’s legacy and current contribution to the Marine Corps.

“While the rededication of the unit’s battle streamers centers on 38’s past achievements, this ceremony is all about the Marines – all of the Marines that were a part, that are a part and will be a part of this control group,” said Vandaveer, commanding officer of MACG-38. “It has always been about the individual Marine, Sailor, civilian and family member who has joined our ranks. This ceremony should serve as an opportunity to reflect our commitment to each other and the Corps.”

MACG-38, which was first created Sept. 1, 1967, is responsible for coordinating all aspects of command and control air defense for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. It provides command and staff functions for its commander whenever the Marines deploy and become part of an aviation combat element in a Marine Air-Ground Task Force.

Over the years, the group has received the Presidential Unit Citation streamer, Navy Unit Commendation with two bronze stars, meritorious unit commendation streamer with two bronze stars, national defense streamer with two bronze stars, armed forces expeditionary streamer, Southwest Asia service streamer with three bronze stars, Afghanistan campaign streamer with one bronze star, Iraq campaign streamer with four bronze stars, and the global war on terrorism expeditionary streamer.

“I’m humbled by the opportunity to participate in this ceremony, and I’m also honored by the Marines that have preceded us,” said Vandaveer. “I’m extremely excited about the Marines I serve along with today and even look forward to seeing what we, Marines of Control Group 38, do in the future.”
