AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - As a member of the U.S. Air Force Academy’s In the Stairwell, Cadet 1st Class Mormon Redd, a Farmington, Utah, native, will be performing at the America’s Got Talent semi-final round Sept. 12.
“Performing for America's Got Talent has been an eye-opening adventure,” Redd said. “It all started off almost as a dare. When we first showed up to AGT no one in the group actually thought we were going to make it past the first round but we figured it would be an interesting adventure, so why not give it a shot? When we made it through the first round we were shocked but beyond excited.”
In the Stairwell is the Academy’s all-male a Capella group formed in 2004 by freshmen cadets who sang together in the only place they could, their dormitory stairwells.
The group was invited by America’s Got Talent producers to compete on the show after they watched a YouTube video of the group performing last fall.
“It wasn't until we started performing the live rounds that I began to realize that to a lot of people we were more than just a bunch of singing boys in cool outfits,” Redd said. “To many of them we were representation of all the men and women who were the uniform and pledge their lives in defense of this country and its freedoms. To them, seeing us on National Television became a reminder that there are people out there putting their lives on the line so that we can sleep safely at night.”
Redd is currently in his senior year at the Academy.
