Fort Bragg, N.C. The 82nd Airborne Division Sustainment Brigade Dining Facility, titled "Provider's Café," participated in the final inspection for the Philip A. Connelly Awards competition, Aug. 29.
After winning best Dining Facility on Fort Bragg, the Provider's Café is competing against four other dining facilities on military posts along the East Coast.
"We want to find out who prepares Army food service the best while doing the basics," said Cheif Warrant Officer 3 Daniel Barker, an inspector with the 406th Army Field Support Brigade. "We are searching for the dining facility that will compete at the Department of the Army level."
This two day operation consists of inspecting everything from food saftey, preparation and protection to time management and readiness.
"We measure the time it takes them [paratroopers] to get their food, starting from the moment they recieve their tray," said Cheif Warrant Officer 4 Luis A. Aviles, East Coast Food Product Manager with the 406th Army Field Support Brigade. "The goal is to make it between five and seven minutes."
This competition represents more than just bragging rights. Among the long list of evaluation areas, command support, and attitude of personnel is included.
"Through the Philip A. Connelly Awards competition, the customers are the ones that are being awarded," explained Aviles. "This competition ensures subperb customer service and food quality."
The Philip A. Connelly Awards Competition also offers Paratroopers training long after they graduate their job specific training.
"I helped build this establishment," remembered Aviles. "In many ways, this DFAC [dining facility] is like my baby, and I am proud of all they [paratroopers] have accomplished."
The Provider's Cafe has previously won the Philip A. Connelly Awards.
"I am very proud of my team," said Sgt. 1st Class Danica S. K. Foster, Dining Facility Manager. "I am confident that my team will win. At this point, this inspection is merely a formality."
The winners of the competition will be revealed through a formal memorandum no later than September 11.
